It’s that time of the year when Capetonians start noticing the days getting shorter and the sun dipping behind the horizon sooner than in the last few summer months. And while you might be gearing up to hibernate and spending your evenings binge-watching Netflix dramas, we want to encourage you to join us and tuck into one or more of our hearty Damhuis winter dishes.

Yes, it does mean that you will have to leave your comfy abode, but it will undoubtedly be worth it. Damhuis is a restaurant with a fireplace, which means you can sit in our Voorhuijs section and enjoy a cosy and warm atmosphere that will kick your winter blues to the curb. Do note: our Fisherman’s Tent area boasts gas heaters, so there’s that option too.

And then, of course, there is the delicious food. We specialise in fresh seafood and traditional South African cuisine that is served in one of the oldest buildings in the Western Cape.  Let’s take a closer look…

The perfect starter at Damhuis Restaurant

Damhuis Fisherman’s Casserole

To start your unique dining experience off and to get those taste buds excited, we recommend the Damhuis Fisherman’s Casserole. This smorgasbord of seafood -think line fish, prawn meat, mussels and salmon- will set certainly set the right tone. Not to mention, it’s served with seasonal veggies in a creamy, to-die-for garlic sauce and a French loaf. Did we just hear your tummy rumbling? Well, we don’t blame you at all, but we are just getting started…

Two main dishes at Damhuis Restaurant that will blow your mind…

Hake and Chips

For a showstopper that will continue the seafood theme, we suggest you try our iconic hake and chips. It’s our best-seller, and for a good reason! The melt-in-your-mouth hake is encased in an irresistible vodka and beer batter and deep-fried to perfection. To complement this piece of foodie paradise, we pair it with French fries, tangy tartar sauce and a fresh side salad.

Lamb Shank

Alternatively, you could opt for, wait for it, our mouth-wateringly tasty lamb shank. This tender Swartland-farmed meat is slow-braised with tangy citrus and Kalamata olives and matched with garlic and red wine jus… that sounds like a mouthful, and we bet you can’t wait to tuck into it! And if that’s not enough, the lamb shank at Damhuis restaurant is served with seasonal vegetables and creamy mash. It’s one of the ultimate winter dishes.

Ok… time out, time out. You’ve probably unfastened your top trouser button by now, but you still have to make room for one more course: dessert, of course.

Heavenly desserts on the Damhuis menu

Double Chocolate Truffle

All the chocoholics out there, listen up! The Damhuis dessert menu has got you covered with not one, but two layers of decadence in the form of our double chocolate truffle. Set on a baked chocolate sponge, this heavenly piece of happiness is served with a truffle ball and butterscotch sauce. One bite of this and you will forget all about the miserable winter weather.

If chocolate isn’t your thing and you want something that reminds you of home, we think you will approve of this local gem.

We pride ourselves on specialising in traditional South African cuisine, that includes some of our sweet treat offerings, too. Case in point: some good ol’ melktert!  But this isn’t just any milk tart: our version is served with apricot compote, a crisp tuile and a mini Hertzoggie. Dare we say it might be better than your Ouma’s melktert?

Book a spot for the whole family

And there you have it: a culinary experience with winter dishes that will send those chills packing! Don’t forget to bring your little ones along.
